This year, it seems, has been all about steelhead and tarpon for me.
I’m not complaining. I’ve been really obsessed about both of those fish and it’s kept me jetting back and forth between the Florida Keys and the Pacific Northwest. As a result I’ve not spent much time on trout streams here in the Southeast.
I got the chance to fish with my good friend Dan Flynn the other day and it was like a homecoming. We caught some nice fish, each of us landing rainbows over twenty inches but, for me, the highlight was this a little brown about eleven inches that Dan landed. A perfect representation of his clan.
I had momentarily forgotten how much I love brown trout. How is that possible?
Here’s his adipose fin.

I’ve not yet fished the Southeast salt but I still haven’t found a fish that’s finer than the trout. Steelhead are an event for me, not a passion. Give me a sweet little trout stream and I’ll be happy.
wait until you get into a low country redfish. Hey gink head over to south carolina…its redfish season!
Fish Whistle,
Thanks for the heads up about the redfishing your way. We are doing our best to fit in a redfish trip asap.
Kent
They are what we fish for in the north. Beautiful, yet take tact to catch. Got to love them.
Is the close-up a brookie? Never saw blue halos on the trout in Ireland… Our trout season just closed for another year. It’ll be March before we get out amongst them again.
That sounds like a long winter. I’m so glad to live where I can fish year round. Still, I’d love to fish Ireland, the land on my ancestors.
Oh, it’s a brown trout in that photo.
There’s no doubt that’s part of the romance of browns-their endless variation. I’ve seen dozens of patterns but never such a blue halo… The winter is long! But we try to keep our eye in at the put and take rainbow trout fisheries or by tackling up for pike.
I have a bit of an inside edge on the fishing on the emerald isle. If you ever get around to paying a visit be sure to get in touch. It would make a helluva blog post!
That it would! Shoot me an email so I can save your contact info. louis@louiscahill.com
