Slow Cast Fly Casting Drill

Great timing is the hallmark of a good fly cast.

Timing is everything, well, pretty close anyway when it comes to casting a fly rod. Plenty of anglers struggle with their timing, often without knowing it’s their timing that’s off. Poor timing robs your cast of distance and accuracy. Fortunately, it’s a fairly easy problem to overcome. All you need is a little practice, and the right practice drill.

In this video I go over the Slow Cast drill I use to improve timing.

  3. On a related note, I recently stumbled upon Gary Borger’s blog and came across one of his old articles on the “3-point grip”. I was always a “thumb on top” caster but decided to give Gary’s 3-point grip a try. The result was magical! I cannot begin to describe the improvement in loop formation and overall casting improvement that this simple change in grip produced. Apparently, the mechanics of this grip ensures that the wrist stops at the near perfect angle on the back cast. Give the 3-point grip a try and combine with this superb exercise from Louis.

  4. Love this tip. My casting instructor (Jonathan Walters) had me do a similar drill that changed my entire mental paradigm on casting: Cast at different lengths (20′-30′-40′) as slowly as you can with just enough power to keep the line in the air and make loops. Don’t worry about tRailing loops. It demonstrated to me how little power and speed it actually takes to keep the line aerialized. When I start tailing again, I slow it down and use only enough power to keep the line in the air and start working out the bad habits again.

  5. Thanks, Louis. I took my rod out the next day to practice what you taught in your video. I hope to see many more of your helpful video posts in the future as, with working two jobs, I don’t get to practice as often as I should and the old, bad habits keep coming back…
