Howler Brothers Clothing

No comments yet / Posted on / by

Howler Brothers continues to grow the company brand with their stylish and functionally designed outdoor apparel. I see the monkey logo everywhere these days, but I see even more people sporting their clothing. I don’t own any of their gear personally but I’ve heard positive feedback from many of their loyal walking billboards. It’s great to see a few good friends put it all on the line to live their passion and then build a successful business together. After all, its not always easy working with friends, and the apparel business isn’t a walk in the park either. What’s hot on the rack this year may not be the next, and it requires no only serious skills but a dedicated staff that has synergy to stay in the game for the long haul. I give Howler Brother two thumbs up. One, for having a diversified clothing line that can outfit me whether I’m headed out for a freshwater or  saltwater fishing trip, and two, for not being sexist and having clothing lines for the females as well. Sunday Classic / South Andros, A Love Story

3 comments / Posted on / by

I love the Bahamas. It hits me about this time every year. Just about the time I start pulling out the polar fleece and looking for my fishing gloves I start thinking about Andros. I love the cold weather, it’s not that, it’s just become a rhythm for me. This is the time of year I start thinking about bonefish and gully wash (the coconut milk rum and gin based fire water the locals drink). I start to crave conch salad and that sweet Bahamian bread.                      I think about warm breezes and cool sand when I should be thinking about migrating brown trout. I start checking over my bonefish gear when I should be prepping my Spey set up. I find myself looking at the weather for Andros when I should be planning my steelhead trips. I think about my friends there at Andros South and the friends I’ve made fishing there who live all over. Some of them even get a phone call. “Hey, what’s up? Done any good fishing lately? Going to the Bahamas this year?”. The other day I even bought a bunch of saltwater tying material. You never know, right? I got some leader material too. Better safe than sorry. It’s almost November and I’m making rum drinks while all my friends are settling into dark winter beers. I imagine they talk about me behind my back like I was a fool hopelessly in love with a girl who doesn’t know he exists. “Wake up dreamer, it’s not gonna happen”. Well, the world needs dreamers. I’m booking my ticket tonight. Try not to hate me.   There’s still time to get in on the Andros South trip Jan 26 – Feb 2. Just follow the link … Continue reading

Saturday Shoutout / Mikes Gone Fishing

9 comments / Posted on / by

Nothing is nearer to my heart than a fellow sharing a few good words and some great photos on a subject we both love. Mike Sepelak does both with a gentile grace that’s impossible to resist. I hear the sounds of the North Carolina mountains in his words and feel his love of the out doors in his photography. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. New Products From Sage for 2013

5 comments / Posted on / by

There aren’t a lot of names in fly fishing bigger than Sage. Known for quality rods hand made here in the USA, Sage is clearly a leader in the sport. When a company like Sage takes a marked turn in its rod design theory, it’s news. The big news from Sage in 2013 is the Circa rod. I have not cast this rod personally but folks I respect are calling it a game changer. The Circa is Sage’s new slow action offering. It features the kinetic technology that was developed for the One rod which delivers a lighter stronger rod but with the promise of a lot more feel and finesse. It certainly seems like a promising prospect. Our friend Kara Armano is back to tell you about the Circa and some other new Sage products for 2013. Kara, if you don’t know, is not just a pretty face. She is an accomplished angler with years of experience. Check out her women’s bonefish school at Andros South.   Come fish with us in the Bahamas! Sunday’s Classic / Split-Shot Placement For Tandem Nymph Rigs

6 comments / Posted on / by

Have you ever heard the saying, “The difference between a good nymph fisherman and a poor nymph fisherman is knowing when to add one more split-shot to your rig”? If your nymphs aren’t getting down in the strike zone, you’re going to be missing a lot of bites. I know this sounds super obvious, but I see anglers all the time nymphing water with far too little weight on there nymph rig. Its often the only reason they’re not getting bites, so don’t be afraid to pile the weight on if you think your nymphs aren’t running deep enough. So now that you understand you always need to have enough split-shot on your rig to get your flies down in the strike zone, now let’s talk about split-shot placement? I get asked the question all the time whether anglers should place there split-shot above there tandem nymphs or between them. Both can be the right choice depending on the type of water your fishing and the specific tandem nymph rig (fly patterns) your fishing. Below are a few examples when I place my split-shot in different locations in my tandem nymph rig. Situations Where I Place Split-Shot Between my Tandem Nymphs 1. Big weighted lead fly with unweighted dropper 20-24″ apart. When you’re fishing a trough for example with fast moving water and you see your dropper nymph riding up high above your lead fly during your drift, place split-shot in between the nymphs to ensure both of your fly patterns will be getting down in the strike zone. This especially holds true when your dropper nymph is beadless, lightly weighted with lead wraps, or 100% unweighted. 2. Both Nymphs are beadless or Lightly-weighted 18-24″ apart Believe it or not, I have days where beadless nymphs are the ticket to … Continue reading

Saturday’s Shoutout / Weekend Fly Fishing Reads

No comments yet / Posted on / by

This week’s Saturday Shoutout I’ve chosen three unique fly fishing reads that you’ll want to check out. The Orvis Guide to Prospecting for Trout – Tom Rosenbauer Its been no secret lately that Tom Rosenbauer from Orvis has become one of my favorite fly fishing technical writers. This past week I read an excerpt from his book, Orvis Guide to Prospecting for Trout, on MidCurrent that wowed me. I’ve been trout fishing most of my life now, and after reading the excerpt from his book, he made me feel like I’ve only just begun to scratch the service in my knowledge and understanding of trout water. If you’re looking to up your trout fishing game, Tom Rosenbauer won’t let you down. I can’t wait to get my hands on the full copy of this book and read it cover to cover. Check out the long excerpt from Tom’s book at MidCurrent. The Bonefish Flat Interviews Marshall Cutchin This past week The Bonefish Flat blog interviewed Marshall Cutchin, retired flats fly fishing guide and owner of MidCurrent and Skiff Republic. It’s a great interview that showcases Marshall’s easy going personality, his fly fishing journey in the industry and what he finds most important these days–having fun. Polly, talks Grayling on her blog – A Flyfisherlady’s Life You don’t hear much about fly fishing for grayling these days. Many anglers write the species off, claiming they lack challenge and don’t live up to the high-class of trout, but I find them beautiful and amazing fish. In Alaska, they’ve been documented to live well over 30 years in nature. That’s pretty cool, but even cooler is how they rise to dry flies. In my opinion, there’s not a prettier site in fly fishing. Check out Polly’s post, “50 Shades of Grayling” on her … Continue reading

Nautilus Reels – New Reel Designs and Factory Expansion

2 comments / Posted on / by

Nautilus Reels has become one of the top fly reel manufacturers in the United States the last few years. In fact, their reels have become so popular, they’ve had a hard time keeping up with demand, and they’ve even had to turn away business at times. But when you consider the tough economic times we’re currently in, that’s a much more desirable position to be in, when lots of companies out there are struggling to boost their stagnant sales. The good news for you loyal Nautilus supporters out there, is it’s all about to change. As we move forward into 2013, the company will have completed the expansion and output in their USA based factory to exceed product demand. You’d think with the company running full throttle to keep up with demand, and at the same time building onto their factory, they wouldn’t have enough time or resources left over to focus on innovation and introducing new products. Surprisingly, that hasn’t been the case at all. They’ve some how managed to rise to the challenge and have found time for all of the above. This year in Reno, Nautilus Reels had a stellar IFTD show, and we were grateful to have Kristen Mustad personally take the time out of his busy schedule to talk with us about their new products for 2013. Sunday Classic / What the Hell is That?

8 comments / Posted on / by

Every once in a while you see something you just can’t explain. I was shooting in the Florida Keys the other day with with my friend Capt. Joel Dickey. It was late in the day. The sun was hanging right on the horizon and I was making the best of the evening light. I was out of the boat, standing in wast deep water shooting Sandy Horn casting from the bow and Joel on the platform when Joel called out “we got a school of perms coming, big school”. I stayed still and quiet, excited about the chance to shoot a hookup from out of the boat. I could see the push about a hundred and fifty yards out. Joel wasn’t kidding about it being a big school. The push looked like the wake of a flats boat. Our setup couldn’t have been better. The push was headed straight for us and fast. I could see Joel squinting into the glare. At a hundred yards he said, “no, it’s not permit”. A minute later, in a very different tone of voice he said,”oh my God that’s a f¥€king huge shark”. Now, I have heard these words before and I have seen sharks in the Keys bigger than a flats boat. You don’t have to say f¥€king huge shark to me twice. I made a little wake of my own getting back to the boat. By this time the push was fifty yards away and closing fast. You could see the water parting off the dorsal fin. I thought about saying, “we’re gonna need a bigger boat”. Before I could it dawned on all of us that we should be able to see a fish that big by now, but we couldn’t. We could just see the push. “It must be … Continue reading

Saturday Shoutout / Off Topic Journeys

2 comments / Posted on / by

I’ve been threatening for a some time to do an off topic shout out. The truth is that I’m into things other than fishing and I’m betting you are to. With that in mind here are three cool things that folk I know are up too. I hope you think they’re cool too. Photography: Christy Perry Photographs the Air I met Christy years ago when I was teaching at the Creative Circus. I sat in on Christy’s first quarter panel review. What I saw in that panel review was a spark of unmistakable genius. Her photos have an ethereal quality that lifts the soul. Christy just returned from an extended trip around the world. She chronicled the experience on her blog. I’d encourage you to scroll back and see the world through her eyes.  click here Music: Walk That Dog My good friend Jenn Carr recently took up the electric bass. She decided to share that journey on her blog, Walk That Dog. The title is musical but I’ll let you read her site to discover what it means. That’s totally in the spirit of what Jenn is up to. She’s discovering what music and the making of it mean to all of us. Here are a few of my favorite posts. The Good Sister Let Your Fingers Dance on the Strings Down in the Flood Nature: Manatee fun! My wife and I just took a short vacation in Florida. As part of the vacation rules I took neither a fly rod or a camera. Kathy is my little nature girl. She loves the outdoors and every living creature in it. She found an awesome captain in Crystal River who does private manatee tours. It was amazing! These wonderful wild creatures showed no fear. They swam right up in our … Continue reading
