Some photos remain special over the years.

There is some truth to the idea that doing anything for a living makes you a little numb to the result. I have a good friend who is an incredible guitar player but he would never play for money. He said he loved it too much. I get that.

Over the years I have taken more photos than I can count. Literally millions of exposures, many of them on film, lost forever to time. There are probably a couple of hundred which are special to me. Some because they are great photos, others because they have memories attached to them and a few that are special for both those reasons and because of what they represent.

This is one of those images and it has remained special to me for many years. In part because it reminds me of a great day. In part because i like the image, but mostly because of what it represents.

The image is of John Gierach, landing a brown trout with a bamboo rod, on the Saint Vrain. If there is a more classic image of fly fishing, I don’t know what it is. It’s also the image that marked my passage to the other side of the curtain. The moment when I stopped reading about the adventure and became part of it.

I hope you enjoy it as well.

  1. Excellent pic, stopping that split second in time. I’ve been taking photos mostly slides early on from the early 60s. Now you can scan all of those early photos up to 5X7, slides and negatives onto digital media SD card , for cheap, by picking up a scanner at Best Buy or similar, the quality is incredible. I bought an Ion scanner for like $79 several years ago and began an adventure to scan thousands of photos onto a portable hard drive, although it took several months. What you’ll see is incredible and bring back lots of memories of your kids and those images like Louis shows us from time to time.

  2. Moments are special, having a token from that moment to remember why they are so special and share with others is a gift. Thank you for sharing.

  3. Louis, I owe you so much! Your story a while back about the day with John Gierach made me curious about his books, and until now I have read most of his books, twice sometimes. John changed quite a few things about my view on fly fishing as well as life itself. And he made me curious about bamboo fly rods, so I started making split cane rods. Now I have a few of those finished, waiting for the beginning of trout season in a couple weeks.
G&G is such a great resource, never fails to amaze, educate or entertain me. Keep up the good work, tight lines!
