Screw finding your passion!

This may seem off topic at first but bear with me. As I read this article, which a friend shared on Facebook, I started realizing it has everything in the world to do with fly fishing. At least for me it does. It’s almost exactly the way I found myself where I am today. It actually made me feel better about the choices I’ve made.

Manson writes,

“Remember back when you were a kid? You would just do things. You never thought to yourself, “What are the relative merits of learning baseball versus football?” You just ran around the playground and played baseball and football. You built sand castles and played tag and asked silly questions and looked for bugs and dug up grass and pretended you were a sewer monster.”

If you are questioning the time you spend fishing, or wish you could spend more, or if you are in any way unsure about what you’re doing with your life, this article is for you. It’s a bright, insightful read. A dose of truth that will either leave you feeling better about where you are or put you on the road to someplace better.

  1. Louis,

Thanks for posting this man, totally relates to me as well as other fishy young’ns. I’m in nursing school, I’ll be honest I’m in it mostly for practicality and parents’ in my ear rather than for love of the profession, I mean I enjoy helping folks out but you can assume how the rest of the story goes. As I sit here typing, I’m halfway through a slow night shift at a hospital wishing I was on the water or at the vise, that’s how how I am whether dressed in scrubs or sitting through another lecture. I love art, fishing, exploration, and tying, I’ve filled out a few custom orders and people have randomly stopped me to look at my flies and end up buying them from me on the spot haha, Rainy’s flies also recently picked me up to be on their design team which I am humbled by. So the dilemma plays out in my head everyday. Sticking with nursing since I can do it proficiently, and I don’t totally hate ithe job because it can be rewarding both on a personal and monetary level, but if I’m thinking about fly fishing 24/7, should I take the risk with designing flies and art then scour the Internet for openings at guide services to promise them I’d do bitch work for an apprenticeship into guiding? I mean I don’t wanna sound like an asshole but I think I have a little bit of talent. Anyways I’m venting now, thanks again for another great post, I follow gink religiously, kudos to you for having a job in the industry we all wish we could work in lol… Tight lines!

  2. I consider myself blessed to work in the fly fishing industry. And although I have enjoyed other jobs in the past, I find the most joy in my work when I’m doing what I truly love.
I think there are three types of people: 1st Always happy. 2nd Never Happy. 3rd Somewhere in between the first two. I think most people (myself included) fall into the third category. So lets all go find an edge that helps us towards the happy side!
