Sometimes in fly tying it’s the little things that really make a difference in the quality of your finished fly patterns. When I first started fly tying I always hated the look of my egg patterns because I could always see my thread down the center of my finished eggs or they wouldn’t end up symetrical. They caught fish but they weren’t as pretty as the egg patterns in the fly shops and it used to drive me crazy. Since then I’ve adopted using a really cool fly tying tool called an Egg Yarn Dispenser . It allows me to tie my egg patterns super quick and I get true consistency from one fly to the next. Watch this quick fly tying video of me tying my chronic egg pattern. Hopefully you’ll pick up a couple tips to improve your own egg patterns.

Keep it Reel,

  1. Great tutorial. I really tried to figure out eggs this year. What I found to be the most helpful is I didn’t realize how much super sharp scissors would help. If you have crappy ones it’s harder to cut the yarn and if you cut it too loosely it makes oblonged type eggs.

  2. Hi Kent,
Just a heads up. Those glo Yarn egg dispensers are actually Thermometer probe covers. They can be had for $4/50 at your local drug store. Or you can do a little dumpster diving at your handy regional medical center (hospital), biohazards included.
The probes are tapered so that you can adjust the size of the egg you want to create. I also noted that you used two colors of glo yarn. I like to add a slip of red in my orange egg so that it looks like the “eye” of the egg.

    • Herman,

Ahhhhhhh, I love the DIY tips. I won’t be diving in any hospital dumpsters but I’ll definitely check out your advice at my local drug store. Thanks so much for the tip. I’ve recently misplaced mine in the chaos of my tying bench.
